Getting Ready for State Board
Getting ready for state board can be a scary process, but don’t let it overwhelm you. The best thing that you can do to take the edge and stress off is to prepare. Make it a priority to have a breakdown of what is on the test for your state, and exactly how you will be expected to execute each task of the exam. Next be clear on what the passing score is for your state, and be ready to perform at your very best.
One of the most important things to know about state board is that there is no room for creativity. Only demonstrate what is required because performing extra steps will not gain you additional points. The examiners are clear on exactly what needs to be performed and they are only looking for those steps. Keep your mind free and clear of anything no related to your test.
Give yourself plenty of time when you are leaving home to get to the test. Most testing sites in the US require candidates to arrive 30 minutes prior to testing or they will not allow you into the exam. Make sure you know the rules for your testing site.
Dress professionally for your exam. All black professional attire is always a safe bet. Wear comfortable shoes, pull your hair back away from your face, and don’t wear any jewelry that hangs from your wrist. It is important to make sure that you do not wear anything that displays the name of your school, or any other beauty brand. Be sure to wear shoes that cover your feet completely, and never wear gym shoes or denim.
Some states require the use of smocks with sleeves while others do accept the use of aprons. It’s very important that you know what your state’s rules are. If you do not know what the rules are for protective clothing while testing, call your board or the testing company to find out exactly what the requirement is.
Be prepared and make sure that you have everything you need in working order. Supplies need to be clean, and labeled according to your state’s requirements. Being unprepared and not having the correct supplies can cause a failing score more than a lack of practical skills can.
The bottom line is when if you want to be successful at state board and pass your exam the first time you take it the key to this happening is being prepared. Take your time, practice with a timer, and be clear on all of your steps. Passing state board doesn’t have to be so stressful and we are dedicated to making sure it is a positive experience.
